My Little Garden 10th April 2021

Winter returned with a vengeance this week and threw hail, snow and frost at us. Garden meetings with friends and family were decidedly chilly and lots of plants that had been duped into thinking it was spring struggled to cope. As for the magnolia, it’s all over until 2022.

Arctic conditions apart, it’s been good to see the changes to the garden over the course of the week. Whilst some things are on their way out, late narcissi and tulips are progressing well. Just bring back the spring sunshine please.

It was hard to decide what to pick for my six choices this week, but here goes:

  1. Camellia

These suffered a little in the bad weather but this photo of the gang of three was taken a couple of days before the frost. It’s done really well this year with masses for flowers, but lots have now turned brown. The pink one in the header photo is extremely sheltered so has survived intact.

2. Muscari

Pretty little blue flowers happily contained in a pot where they can’t escape.

3. Seedlings

These are Zinnia from a free packet of seeds with Gardener’s World Mag last year. And before anyone shouts that they shouldn’t be outside, it was just a brief visit for the purpose of taking a photo. I also have cosmos on the go, but most seeds will be sown directly outside in the next couple of weeks.

4. Tawny Mining Bee

There seems to be a lot of these about this spring and they have a favourite spot in the garden. They don’t keep still for long and even when they do, they don’t choose a very picturesque location. Always good to see them though.

5. Tulip Update

In this bed, I planted a combination of Ronaldo, Flaming Spring Green and Jan Reus and by yesterday they were coming on nicely.

On reflection, I think that the first tulip to flower in the garden, which I included in last week’s blog, might not be Ronaldo after all, but a relic from 2020. If so, it’s likely to be Tulipa ‘Attilla Graffiti’. I’ll compare when the true Ronaldo fully opens, but if anyone has any thoughts. A fine tulip regardless.

This next one is Tulipa ‘Virichic’ which I’ve never grown before and am very excited about. Hopefully the flowers will open this week.

6. Amelanchier

A deservedly popular small tree with loads of blossom and just look at that blue sky.

And that’s it for another week. I’m looking forward to seeing my hairdresser for the first time this year on Wednesday and I can’t wait.
