My Little Garden 10th December 2022

Just when I was wondering what on earth I was going to photograph for this week’s Six on Saturday, we had the first frost of the year. Phew!

I really cannot remember the last time we had a frost that lasted so long here. We’re in a very sheltered suburban setting, so we usually escape the worst of any weather, but this week we had three full days of proper frost. The ground has been rock solid, and it’s fortunate that I had put in the last of the tulips on Tuesday afternoon. Not that I had planned to acquire any more tulips, but I couldn’t possibly have declined the offer of a large bag of ‘Belle Epoque’ could I….

Anyway, not being one to waste an opportunity, this week’s photos have got a common theme, so here we go with six (yes you’ve guessed it) frosty garden finds.

  1. Frosty Grass

Looking a bit like messy hair full of sticky hairspray, here we have Nassella tenuissima mingling with the last of the Catananche caerulea. This shot was taken on Wednesday, when the frost was relatively light and the outside temperature was almost barmy in comparison to yesterday.

On Friday it was a tad colder and the frost was a little more severe.

2. Frosty flower

A close up of one the aforementioned Catananche flowers, again taken on Wednesday.

3. Frosty hydrangea

Little Lime looking a little chilly.

And on Friday

4. Frosty fuchsia

I’ve no idea what variety this is or whether it’s hardy. I suspect not….

5. Frosty twigs

Prunus Kojo-no-mai has just been a mass of twisty twigs after the leaves dropped few weeks ago.

But amazingly, I saw some fantastic specimens still in full autumn foliage on Tuesday when I visited the Castlefield Viaduct garden in Manchester. The spring blossom will be something special to look forward to.

6. Frosty Penstemon

A final flower from my little white garden.

I’m sure many of the Saturday bloggers will have a lot more interesting stuff than I have in my garden, so a good place to start is Jim’s blog which has links to lots of others.

Or just look for the #SixonSaturday hashtag on Twitter and Mastodon.

Have a great weekend.
