My Little Garden 10th June 2023

Another week has passed by in a haze of work, childcare and futile attempts to get on top of my own garden. The temperatures have not been particularly high due to a chill wind on occasions, but it’s been four weeks since it last rained, and the garden is very dry.

Over the course of the last seven days, I’ve planted a new border and added a rose and perennials to a pretty little courtyard garden. Hardly ideal timing, given the weather conditions, but apparently, there may be thunderstorms over the weekend. I really hope it happens (preferably overnight).

My garden choices week reflect the progress of the season, but I’m quite sad to see that plants like the peony are flagging far too quickly. I keep seeing gaps that I’m not happy with but don’t have time to deal with. Maybe next week will be different, and at least the children are back at school. Two full days of a lively six and four year old are seriously hard work at the age of sixty four.

Six things that are looking ok in the garden this week are….

  1. Campanula

I don’t remember buying this, but it’s perfect for the spot it’s in.

2. Rose

‘New Dawn’ is the most poorly performing of my roses, but I still really like it. I just need to give it a little more encouragement to do better.

I

3. Poppies

I have two varieties of poppies in the garden. ‘Patty’s Plum’ and this one that I don’t know the name of, which is a little darker in colour.

4. Geranium

The first of the ‘Splish Splash’ flowers. I have lots of baby plants too, but what colour will the flowers be. Purple, white, or hopefully a mix of both like this one….

5. Salvia

‘Caradonna’ has bulked up nicely this year.

6. Another rose

‘Gertrude Jekyll’ never disappoints and the granddaughters have made rose perfume this week.

Have a great weekend, and please take a look at the other Saturday blogs, which are mostly on WordPress but often shared on Twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday. Jim’s blog https://gardenruminations.co.uk/ is a great place to start with links to many others.

See you next week.
