My Little Garden 10th Oct 2020

Apart from the persistent rain (again), this week has been a good one. The husband and I went on a little mini break last weekend and I persuaded him it would be a good idea to call at a garden I wanted to see on our way up to Teesdale. Not his favourite way to spend an afternoon (for some weird reason he prefers golf courses) but it was the last two days of the season for Newby Hall near Ripon and the location was perfect for a wander and a cup of coffee. I knew that I had probably missed the best of the summer colour, but thanks to the dahlias, salvias and asters there was still plenty of summer hanging on, and despite the heavy rain it was a very enjoyable visit. I (or maybe we) will go back next summer. There are a few photos on Twitter if you want to see them and I highly recommend the garden.

Talking of asters, I have to warn you that a few of them feature in my choices for Six on Saturday this week. You may have seen some of them before but at this time of year it’s almost impossible to find six new things of interest in the garden. Like the snapdragon in the header photo, they are plants that carry on regardless of the wet weather.

1.I’ll start with an aster that I know you haven’t seen before because it’s flowers have only just opened. It’s not my favourite plant; partly because it flowers very late but mostly because it is a little underwhelming. I had thought it was Aster novi belgii ‘Little Ness’ but that’s supposed to be pale pink rather than white so maybe I’m mistaken.

2. This aster, on the other hand, is a gorgeous colour albeit not very floriferous this year. I think I really need to give it some TLC to perk it up for next summer. In truth it grows at the back of something else and I had completely forgotten about it until I started to tidy up the bed.

Aster novi-belgii ‘Wintston Churchill’

This is a slightly better shot from last year with added rainsdrops.

3. Shall we carry on with the aster theme? These are fading away now but they are always spectacular flowers and I wouldn’t be without them. And yes I have posted pictures of this one before. Unlike the little white aster, this variety gives me several weeks of flowers to enjoy.

Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’

4. And I’ve also shared lots of photos of this one which is my favourite.

Aster amellus ‘Veilchenkönigin’

5. Enough of the asters! The gaura is still lovely and wafting away regardless of the rain. A really excellent plant for a container if space is at a premium.

6. And finally, there has been a noticeable change in the garden this week and the Amelanchier is starting to show it’s autumn colours. It’s a lovely tree but the leaves are changing so quickly I’m afraid they will drop before I have time to enjoy them. And all this rain and wind isn’t helping unfortunately.

So that’s my Six on Saturday for another week. Links to lots more ‘sixes’ can be found on the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection, and there are many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday

Wishing you a great gardening weekend and I hope the weather is kind for bulb planting!
