My Little Garden 11th March 2023

This week has seen a return to the gloom of winter, with sleet, snow, and cold winds. Gardening has not been practical, apart from yesterday afternoon, which was gloriously sunny and completely at odds with the rest of the week. How quickly things can change, if only briefly judging by the forecast for today.

When I ventured outside on Thursday to take some photos for Six on Saturday, it was so bitterly cold, I gave up and tried again when things warmed up a little on Friday. As spring has stalled, there aren’t a lot of new things to show you that are particularly photogenic, but let’s start with the one new thing I spotted yesterday, which was a surprise camellia flower. It was very hidden away, and I almost missed it, but here we are.

  1. Camellia x williamsii ‘Anticipation’

In anticipation of spring, hopefully.

2. Hellebore ‘Penny’s Pink’

A lovely hellebore with a backdrop of hydrangea and untidy garden.

3. Shoots

All the tulips are coming along nicely apart from the very last bulbs that were planted in December, which are nowhere to be seen yet.

4. Purple crocus

Still putting on a good show despite the conditions.

5. Christmas tree

A very healthy looking 3 year old Picea glauca ‘Conica’ which gets decorated at Christmas time and a little winter holiday in the porch.

6. The annual hellebore arrangement

It just had to be done.

And that’s it for another week. Hopefully, it will warm up in the next few days and encourage a few more pre-spring developments in the garden.

I’m sure Jim will have some fabulous camellias to share as well as lots of other signs of spring.

Have a great weekend.
