My Little Garden 12th June 2021

Another week has passed by without a drop of rain and whilst I don’t want to complain, if someone could do a little rain dance with a request for overnight rain, that would be marvellous.

Fortunately, watering is a manageable task in a small garden and many of my plants are fairly tolerant of dry spells. In fact this has been the week when buds opened and the garden started to look like summer had finally arrived.

At the beginning of the week I had an excellent day out with fellow members of the Garden Media Guild. We visited two stunning gardens in Shropshire and it was brilliant to meet some of the people I ‘chat’ to on social media. You can read about the visits here. My first day out with the GMG. So many beautiful plants in both the gardens!

Back at home, it’s been a difficult choice for this week’s Six on Saturday, but here they are:

  1. Peony

I only have the one, which is ‘Bowl of Beauty’. Easy to grow and lots of buds still to open.

2. Roses

It was the turn of Rosa ‘Handel’ to put on a show this week. It only has a delicate scent but is such a beautiful rose.

The new bare root roses that I planted a few weeks ago are growing well and I’m very optimistic they will flower over the summer.

3. Wildlife

Over the course of the week I’ve spotted a dragonfly, various butterflies, including a Painted Lady which I didn’t see at all last year, and lots of little buzzy creatures. And how many photos did I get? Only one of a very sleepy bee. Note to self - must try harder next week!

4. Alliums

Purple Sensation and Purple Rain have lost most of their colour already, but Christophii is just getting going.

5. Geranium

I had thought that this was ‘Blue Cloud’ so either I was mistaken or the label was wrong. I think it’s likely to be ‘Cloud Nine’ which is a very pretty double so I’m not too unhappy.

6. Another Geranium

I’m a big fan of geraniums and this is ‘Ann Folkhard’ which weaves its way around other plants and flowers all summer long. Planted in the right place it’s brilliant and the colour is just gorgeous. ‘Anne Thomson’ is very similar and I’m reliably informed that it’s even better so I’m growing both this year to compare.

So that’s my selection at the end of a very pleasant week and I wish you all a great weekend.
