My Little Garden 13th April 2024

I’ve complained several times this year about the rain, whilst always assuming that things would improve when April arrived. Not so, it appears, because up until Thursday this week, there’s been a non-stop deluge of the stuff. On Tuesday afternoon, when I was looking after a poorly grandaughter, the combined wind and rain flattened several,of the narcissi and tulips. It really is so depressing, and with more rain forecast from midday tomorrow, there doesn’t seem to be any let up.

So, in my soggy April garden, this is what I can share with you.

  1. Tulipa ‘Slawa’

I think this might be a new favourite.

2. Tulipa ‘Exotic Parrot’

It’s been interesting to see how this one developed, but I won’t be growing it again.

They’re even more red now.

3. Tulipa ‘Negrita’

An old favourite that I like to combine with other colours. This one didn’t survive the storm in an upright state.

4. Amelanchier blossom

This has disappeared over the course of the week, but we now have the berries to look forward to.

5. Primula

I bought this at a plant fair at Arley Hall a few weeks ago. There were no flowers at that stage, but the picture showed white ones, and it was labelled Primula sieboldii ‘Tatuta-no-yube’. The flowers have turned out very pink, so I looked it up, and it seems more like ‘Shibori-Tatuta’ to me. It’s very pretty anyway.

6. Butterfly

Despite the dreadful weather, I spotted this Small Tortoiseshell as well as a Speckled Wood and Orange Tip in the garden this week. I hope these are the first of many.

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend.
