My Little Garden 13th March 2021

I have been spending quite a bit of money on plants this week. Something I’m always happy to do and mostly it’s been other people’s money, and plants for their gardens rather mine. It’s not a bad way to spend a wet and windy week is it? And it’s nice to know that all the perennials I’ve been ordering are being well looked after at Bluebell Cottage Gardens until next month.

Apart from plant shopping, I’ve been working on a couple of new designs which may well lead to more plant shopping in a few weeks time. Happy days!

At home, it’s been a case of hoping that the wind doesn’t cause too much damage. A few flattened spring flowers I can cope with, but any major trauma would not be welcome.

As usual, I took these photos for my six on Saturday selection throughout the week, which is just as well given the weather.

  1. A couple of surprises

A rogue white crocus appeared temporarily alongside the purple ones. But after two days of wind and rain, I have to report that sadly it is no more.

And I’m pretty sure I didn’t plant a hyacinth where this one popped up.

2. Prunus

This dinky little cherry tree is getting it’s first flowers, but yesterday I spotted a wood pigeon pecking at it. Considering how well fed the birds in this garden are, how dare it.

3. Last week’s missing hellebore

I really like the colours on this hellebore but it was between flowers when I did my floating hellebore collection last week. It’s definitely a bit of a weakling but I managed to prop it up for a photo in the middle of the week. Unfortunately, the wind and rain arrived shortly after and there was another sad ending.

4. Erythronium

Every day something new seems to emerge from the soil. I always forget about these erythroniums over the summer but they’re lovely and I’d really like some more. One of the white flowered varieties would be nice. White Beauty maybe. Something else for the autumn list.

5. The big box

This is not plant related, but the rather large box that my small garden sofa arrived in this week proved great fun for two small granddaughters. Can you spot the fingers……

6. Jetfire

The first of the daffodils are coming on nicely now and Narcissus ‘Jetfire’ has joined N. ‘Tete a Tete’ and N. ‘February Gold’. I have a few more varieties, mostly dwarf ones in keeping with the size of the garden, to come in the next few weeks. Even though I add to ‘the collection’ every year, I always wish I had more.

And that’s my ‘Six on Saturday’ for this week. I’m expecting the arrival of some dahlia tubers later today, or perhaps Monday, and I’ll report back next time.
