My Little Garden 13th Jan 2023

It’s been a bit nippy this week, but in contrast to the cold grey bleakness we’ve had one wonderful blue sky day, which made the world feel completely different. I seized the opportunity of appropriating the husband’s car (mine is still awaiting a part from Russia or for VW to get their act together) and had a wander around the Dunham Massey winter garden. It was worth the effort to see the emerging snowdrops and fabulous witch-hazel. I’ve always fancied one of these shrubs for winter interest, so I went to price one at the local garden centre. As I mentioned on Twitter /X yesterday, they had a beautiful specimen of ‘Jelena’ for sale at £50 and a bare twig at £16. I walked away but encouraged by a Diane, a fellow Six on Saturday contributor, I may go back. And if I do it will be for the more expensive one. Unless I find a bargain elsewhere, of course….

This is where I thought of planting it.

The original water feature was removed a couple of years ago, and I’ve been faffing with different plants since then. Everything in there can easily be moved after the bulbs have flowered, and with a witch-hazel, I would have a lovely winter interest shrub that can be seen from the dining room. A few bulbs and small perennials/annuals for spring and summer would give year-round interest. What do you think? Will I or won’t I? I’ll let you know next week.

Also, on the sunny day, I ventured out for a full inspection of the garden to see how things were progressing. Will the snowdrops have opened properly, I wondered. Are there any more crocus? Have any more shoots broken through? Can I find six things in time for Saturday? So many questions, but here’s what I found.

  1. Snowdrops

The snowdrops are on the brink, but I suspect they might stay that way for a little while yet.

2. Crocus

There is a new crocus this week, but as you can see, it’s a little worse for wear. Still, it’s the first of the yellow ones and I’m happy to see it.

3. Foliage

Photinia ‘Pink Marble’ has a few leaves with delightful pink splodges.

4. Hydrangea

You know things are desperate when I share brown hydrangea flowers twice in the space of a couple of weeks. At least this time there’s a bit of sun to brighten them up.

5. Hellebore

Penny’s Pink is progressing well and will flower a little earlier than last year I think.

6. Indoors

A vase of tulips in the kitchen. They’ve lasted well on my north facing window sill.

Snow is in forecast for next week, so we might get some white photos! On that note, I’ll wish you a very happy weekend.
