My Little Garden 14th Nov 2020

It’s been a real mixed bag of work, weather and gardening in recent days, with a bit of drama to end the week. The drama involved United Utilities who came to replace an old lead pipe in the road at the request of a neighbour. Unfortunately, this required a good sized chunk of road being dug up near to our house and you can guess what happened….. a fountain that would give the one at Lake Geneva a run for it’s money appeared. This caused a fair bit of angst among the workmen and they retired to their vans to watch the show and wait for someone important to arrive. When ‘the boss’ eventually appeared to turn the tap off, it was three pm and time to clock off for the day. Back they came at six am this morning with lots of flashing lights and hopefully enough machinery to finish the job. Just as well I wasn’t planning a lie in!

In other more mundane news, I have finished planting the bulbs in my garden. As the squirrels haven’t started digging yet I am hoping they didn’t notice. I ‘cleverly’ distracted them a few weeks ago with a couple of decoy pots which were prepped with compost but no bulbs. They dug but were disappointed and I felt very smug. Outsmarting a squirrel is a small but very satisfying achievement. Fred Poodle also came to visit for the first time when my eldest son came to pick his daughters up after work. The sight of a mad bundle of fluff running round the garden should put the squirrels off too. Unfortunately there’s no new cute puppy photo but you can see one from a couple of weeks ago in his own garden. Seems like he may be getting the hang of this gardening lark, particularly when it comes to containers.

Moving on to more important matters however, these are my Six choices for this week.

1. The Cornus is still clinging on to a few leaves and these are very attractive. It’s the colour of it’s stems in winter that earn it it’s place in the garden though, and I’m really looking forward to these.

Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’

2. As well as bulbs (mostly tulips) I also planted some pale yellow wallflowers this week. They arrived as plug plants in October and they’ve come on nicely. And yes of course they are in Peat Free compost as are all my container bulbs. I’m very lucky that I have several sources of good quality peat free locally.

3. These are my asters which were hit by the first frost the other week. I shall be leaving them as is and hoping for a frosty photo opportunity soon.

Aster amellus ‘Veilchenkönigin’

4. I’m so pleased that my rosebud from last week did open in the end. A perfect November rose.

Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’

5. The penstemon pot has been moved to it’s winter home but seems to be carrying on quite happily for now.

6. And as flowers are in short supply this week I’ll finish with a shot of my rusty poppy plant stakes just catching the sun.

So that’s my Six on Saturday for another week. Links to lots more ‘sixes’ can be found on the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection. There are also many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
