My Little Garden 15th April 2023
If last week was about the spring sunshine, this week has been about the rain. Lots of it, accompanied by a very chill wind. Just the ticket when I’ve had two full days of lively grandchildren care, interspersed with a planting day. I’m definitely getting too old for this lark.
On the first childcare day, we went to the farm at Tatton Park in Cheshire. The girls loved the animals, especially the baby lambs, but it’s not a cheap day out. £8 to park on the estate followed by a family ticket of £21 for the farm itself. Not to mention extra sundry spends.
On my planting half day, rain was predicted from 11:00 am, but it arrived early. Suffice to say, the conditions weren’t the best and not even a warming cuppa was on offer until I was packing up.
Anyway, back to gentler gardening matters, and in my little garden this week, things are looking, if not feeling, very springlike. I’ll go minimal on tulips this week, because they are only just starting to flower and I’m going to bore you with them for weeks to come.
- Tulips
Lots of them are starting to open now. This is supposed to be T. Flaming Spring Green, but it appears to be missing its flame.
2. Pots
A bit of a random selection, with tulips about to flower, (ok I’ve said the T word again) muscari and borrowed purple wallflowers. The latter have disappeared now to their new home, (my Wednesday planting day), but they certainly brightened things up whilst waiting for the tulips to bloom.
3. Swingseat
This has had a coat of oil and has been well used already this spring. It resides in the sunniest part of the garden and the fragrant narcissi are perfectly placed to provide scented swinging enjoyment. Oh, and there are tulips in the other pots.
4. Muscari
Just at their peak and worthy of their place in the six. Can you guess what’s in the pots behind.
5. More blue
I planted Scilla luciliae or Chionodoxa luciliae with Narcissus Tête-à-tête last autumn and have been really pleased with the result. A perfect March combination.
6. Erythronium
The most awkwardly placed clump of erythroniums you could possibly imagine.
And that’s it from my little garden for another week. Lots more on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday or head to the blog of Jim our host.

Have a great weekend.
