My Little Garden 15th July 2023

This week, I started a mini project in my little garden. Having accidentally chopped through the wire of a fairly tacky old water feature a few weeks back, I decided that I needed something completely different.

I recklessly ordered an 80cm corten steel ‘water bowl’ and started excavating the centre of a paved circle. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while but haven’t quite got round to it. I’m sure you want to see the efforts of a sledgehammer wielding granny, so I’m making it the first of my Six on Saturday choices.

  1. The Project

And here we are with just a few bits of concrete and one or two (lots) stones left to remove, and then I can start to think about the planting to surround it. I know it doesn’t look that exciting now, but when the rusty colour develops and it’s full of water, I think it will be a great feature.

2. Before and after

Photo 1 was taken a week ago when the echinops were covered in black fly. The ladybirds were still feasting on the achillea then, but having exhausted their supply of tasty treats, moved on to the echinops. Isn’t nature wonderful!

Unfortunately it’s been raining all day, so the ladybirds were hiding when I took the after shot.

3. Penstemon

Pensham Laura is a new purchase for this year. She’s rather beautiful.

4. Godetia

I don’t grow a lot of annuals from seed, but I thought I’d give godetia a whirl this year, and I’ll certainly be growing them again.

5. Agapanthus

I lost my original plant last winter, which had 30 plus flowers on one plant at its peak. Its replacement was obviously purchased from the same nursery at Arley Hall, and I have high hopes for it.

6. Hydrangea and Stachys

Hydrangea ‘Little Lime’ and Stachys macrantha ‘Rosea’. The flowers of the Hydrangea will eventually turn pink themselves but for now the Stachys is a nice contrast to the greeny white flowers.

And that’s it from me. I’m off to the RHS Tatton flower show next week, so I might be sharing six highlights from there.

Have a great weekend.
