My Little Garden 15th May 2021

It’s been such a busy week for planting jobs and yesterday was the first time I didn’t get drenched. Why is it that our weather always seems to go from one extreme to the other: weeks of drought followed by endless deluges. The reason I’ve been so busy is that our glorious weather has hampered the completion of a couple of hard landscaping jobs, which in turn dictated when the planting could be done. As a result I’ve had a garden full of other people’s plants just waiting to go to their final home. At least I’ve not had to water them, but the thought of a lazy weekend ahead just relaxing in my garden in the May sunshine would be bliss. Now what’s the forecast again ……..

We seem to moving quite rapidly through this rainy month of May, and the roses are now full of buds, which is always exciting to see. A few weeks ago I planted two bare root roses as well (Ballerina and The Generous Gardener) and am very happy to see new growth appearing.

But as time marches on, the end of tulip season approaches and I don’t think these beauties will figure in my Six on Saturday selection after this week. So for one last week they get the top slot.

  1. Tulips

Tulipa ‘Golden Artist’ is a really interesting Viridiflora tulip that’s a new one to me for this year. It’s not as tall as I expected but the colours are very striking. I think perhaps I might try in it a container if I grow it again.

This one is an old favourite.

Tulipa ‘Spring Green’

I’ve always liked the tulips that have a touch of green, so I have a pot of these Tulipa ‘Greenland’ where they can be seen from the house. Having grown T. Virichic this year though, I’m ever so slightly disappointed with this past firm favourite.

And to round things off, here’s a collage of this year’s tulip collection

2. Clematis

The Montana that I tried (unsuccessfully) to kill off last year is flowering again. No doubt I’ll spend the summer trying to tame it, but for now the flowers are pretty.

Miss Bateman is also doing well and is currently rampaging through the viburnum. The white flowers really stand out at the bottom of the garden, and I like the fact that there is a touch of green to the petals.

3. Phlox

I included a photo of this last week when it was just coming into flower, and here is it one week on. This phlox looks gorgeous and smells gorgeous and I wish it had a longer season.

Phlox divaricata ‘Clouds of Perfume’

4. Pieris

This is a very common shrub but the bees just love the flowers at this time of year so I thought it was worth including. It was the only blue sky of the week as well!

Pieris ‘Forest Flame’

5. Geranium

This little gem lives under the aforementioned pieris and provides even more treats for the bees.

Geranium phaeum ‘Lily Lovell’

6. Geum

This isn’t actually my plant although I do have Geum ‘Mai Tai' in my front garden. It (or rather they) have now gone to their new home but I thought they looked so nice with the forget-me-nots in the background that they deserved my final slot of the week.

Well that’s my selection for the middle weekend of May and I’ll wish you a great gardening weekend.
