My Little Garden 16th Oct 2021

I didn’t expect the area where I live to be topping the Covid-19 statistics this week. The rapid increase in Trafford has been attributed to the rate of infection in schoolchildren, and given one daughter in law is a teacher and three out of the four granddaughters are in school, I think there’s a fair chance that some members of the family might succumb. I wonder whether the rates in other north west hotspots are just as bad, but perhaps the willingness to be tested for a mild case of the virus is a little less enthusiastic these days….

Something that pleased me much more than virus numbers this week, was the return of drier weather on Thursday and Friday. I squeezed in a trip to RHS Bridgewater in Salford, which is looking magnificent in it’s autumn colours, as well as a ticking off a couple of small bulb planting jobs. Some of my pots at home are also planted up, and so far so good with the squirrel plan. Its early days yet but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

For my six garden choices this week, I thought I’d go for mostly autumnal shades starting with a new favourite.

  1. Hydrangea

This is Hydrangea ‘Little Lime’, which turns pink in autumn instead of white with a hint of green. I really like the fact that it changes colour; it’s like having two hydrangeas for the price of one.

2. Berries and thorns

I had to get this shot before the birds eat all the berries despite the risk of pyracantha injury from it’s thorns. Woe betide any aspiring burglar who tries to climb the fence where it grows!

3. The end of the echinaceas

I think the flowers still look good even in a state of decay.

4. Foliage

The leaves of the Prunus Kojo-no-mai are starting to turn yellow and orange, although some have fallen off a little prematurely.

5. Cosmos

Perhaps not very autumnal but it’s always good to have this late flowering annual around as long as possible.

6. Crab Apple

And finally the crab apple tree. Although it’s two years old now I had to reintroduce some support to help it stay upright with the amount of fruit it has. The robin seems quite keen on the fallen apples so hopefully the tree will provide sustenance for some time to come.

And that’s it for another week. Hopefully the fine weather will last over the weekend and more gardening will be done.
