My Little Garden 16th Sept 2023

Autumn arrived earlier this week. After our mini heatwave, the temperatures dropped, and we had a pleasant mix of sunshine and showers: perfect September weather. I had a little trip out to Arley Hall and Gardens midweek and spotted lots of butterflies. Perhaps a slight exaggeration, but I did see Red Admirals, Commas, and a Painted Lady posing on the dahlias.

My little garden is looking refreshed from the rain, but I know there are quite a few tweaks to be made for next year. All part of the fun, and for now I’m just enjoying what there is, despite the fact that my six contains a mini disaster.

  1. The nursery

In the absence of a greenhouse or anywhere sensible to store fledgling plants, it’s nice to see that cracks in the paving are being utilised by this little pansy.

2. Gaura

This hasn’t done particularly well this summer so I’m a bit disappointed. Gaura ‘Rosyjane’ is very lovely but hasn’t pulled its weight.

3. Aster

This was my ‘extra’ photo last week, but it didn’t get a mention, so here it is again - Aster amellus ‘Veilchenkonigin’.

4. Alchemilla mollis

A very useful perennial that is guaranteed to propagate itself with no encouragement whatsoever. The yellow flowers in early summer are pretty and the leaves hold raindrops beautifully.

5. Where are the berries

I bought this Sorbus vilmorinii last year, and I had high hopes for lots of autumn berries. Unfortunately, a storm destroyed the majority of the flowers before the berries formed so I have around six in total. Most annoying!

6. Zinnia

A shocking pink one this week.

And that’s it for another week. I’m taking grandaughter number three on a birthday shopping trip this morning. Apparently it involves ‘Build a Bear’ and lunch at her favourite restaurant aka McDonalds. Happy times.
