My Little Garden 17th Dec 2022

As we come to the end of a second very cold week, I find myself longing for spring. The frost is still very much with us and there’s no chance of anything breaking through the frozen crust of soil. I have been venturing into the garden only to feed the birds and take a few photos for #SixonSaturday but although they aren’t the best of shots, I’m not inclined to take more. On the plus side, I’m catching up on paperwork, the Christmas related chores are done, so all is not lost.

So what did I find for this week’s ‘six’. Well not a lot really, but here goes…

  1. Birds

I mentioned birds. The robin(s) and the blackbirds are the most regular callers, along with wood pigeons, blue tits and magpies. I haven’t seen the dunnocks for a while, so I’m assuming they’ve found a better supply of food elsewhere.

2. Catkins

Garrya eliptica ‘James Roof’ needs a radical chop next spring but for now is gracing the garden with its winter tassels.

3. Last aster standing

Kalimeris yomena ‘Shogun’ is a really super perennial. The variegated leaves make it a lovely foliage plant throughout the year and it has pretty little lilac coloured flowers in late summer. The frosted flowers are also a real joy in December.

4. Mahonia

A poor shot, but worthy of inclusion because its just such a gorgeous blast of winter colour.

5. Frozen bird

When times are desperate, theres always a garden ornament to turn to.

6. Stems

Cornus is a real star in any winter garden. The stems light up in the sun and make it a stunning feature.

And we made to the end of another six. Have a great weekend and thank you for reading. Follow #SixonSaturday on Twitter and Mastodon for more garden delights.
