My Little Garden 17th June 2023
Hot, hot, hot is the best way to describe this week, and I’m wilting like some of the plants in my garden. The rain didn’t arrive as promised last Sunday but twenty-four hours later we experienced an very impressive thunderstorm accompanied by rain and huge hailstones. Since then there’s barely been a cloud in the sky, the grass is yellow, and the water meter is in overdrive. I’m almost, but not quite, looking forward to a change next week.
Despite the heat, I spent a few happy hours at Cholmondeley Castle Gardens on Wednesday. It’s one of my absolute favourite gardens, with lots of shady places and vast numbers of orchids in the long grass. I only found ‘Common Spotted’ but there were so many of them. I called into Bluebell Cottage Gardens on my way home to pick up the last few perennials for a client and to attempt a few photos in the bright afternoon sun. Their orchard meadow was looking particularly lovely, and I found some pleasant shady spots.
So what is flowering (or wilting) this week in my little garden.
- Clematis
Clematis ‘Remembrance’ is a prolific flowerer, but I wish it wouldn’t keep trying to escape over the fence. It seems very unfair when the only things our next-door neighbours share with us are their weeds.
2. Alliums
The colour has faded now, but I never cut back because they still look amazing. This one is ‘Purple Rain’.
3. Penstemon ‘Electric Blue’
Isn’t the colour of this just amazing. I saw it last year and was almost tempted. This year, I succumbed and let it come home with me.
4. Geranium ‘Splish Splash Splat’
I’ve added the splat to the splash splash because that’s exactly what happened in the thunderstorm. It is currently propped up so I can still enjoy the flowers.
5. Geranium ‘Red Admiral’
Another of my favourite geraniums, which by no stretch of the imagination is red, like its name suggests.
6. Eryngiums
This one is in my front garden and I can’t remember the name, but it is beautifully blue.
This Eryngium ‘Victory Blue’ is in the back garden and was acquired as a bare root from Farmer Gracy. I’m hoping it turns little bluer.
And another week has drifted by. By next Saturday, we will have passed the longest day and will probably be fed up with the rain.
In the meantime, relax, put your feet up and enjoy all the six on Saturday blogs and photos.
Have a great weekend.
