My Little Garden 17th Oct 2020

I made a Christmas cake this week. Not that I expect to have many visitors over the festive period but I see no reason not to carry on with the tradition. Most of it tends to be given away anyway and I’m sure the same will happen this year one way or another.

I also had my first ever flu jab. As I’ve never had flu and don’t have any health issues I haven’t really thought about it before, but as the age limit has been reduced and my GP letter arrived, I thought it would be sensible to make an appointment. The receptionist at the surgery told me they were doing vaccinations for my category (green!?) on 20th November which seemed very late, so I booked with the local chemist instead. On arrival, I was slightly amused to find a form with various options to tick if you didn’t want to pay your £15. I fell into the under 65 and healthy option and you can guess what that meant, but fortunately I had taken a debit card. Quite what the point of the GP letter was I don’t know!

On Wednesday this week Greater Manchester came out of it’s local lockdown and into Tier 2 which allows people to meet outside in the garden (I think). But even before that change had time to sink in ‘discussions’ were in hand to move the region up from Tier 2 to Tier 3. It seems bizarre that individual councils can negotiate which businesses close and which stay open but what do I know…..

So apart from all that, what’s been happening in the garden as we venture further into autumn. My holly tree has had a long overdue trim and looks much better. Thank you Mark at JCM Tree services in Sale for the excellent job. Not one single plant got trampled in the process which was no mean feat! As for the rest of the garden, the colour is still lasting out so far.

1.This is a very pretty grass and it might seem slightly odd that I have it growing in a container but it works for me. I think it really shines in autumn.

2. Geranium Rozanne is an absolute star and I thoroughly recommend it if you are looking for a long flowering geranium.

3. This is one of my lovely echinacea flowers. Ok, it’s well past it’s best but there is still beauty in a decaying flower and the light was rather lovely.

Echinacea purpurea ‘Rubinstern’

4. My supermarket dahlia is exceeding all expectations. The slugs have tried their best but the flowers are still coming. I will definitely try more dahlias next year.

5. Most of the crab apples have fallen or been attacked by the birds but I’m so pleased I spent the vast sum of £20 on this tree in October last year.

6. And although this isn’t garden related I know you all want to see a picture of the aforementioned Christmas cake, so here it is when it was fresh out of the oven.

So that’s my Six on Saturday for another week. Links to lots more ‘sixes’ can be found on the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection, and there are many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday

Wishing you a great gardening weekend. I’m expecting a bulb delivery which is super exciting and going to keep me busy!
