My Little Garden 18th July 2020
This week it rained most of the time, and to make matters worse it rained on St Swithins day which means that according to folklore it will carry on raining for the next 40 days. That will take us to autumn when no doubt some nice sunny weather will return just in time for the schools to reopen.
Fortunately, I had lots of indoor ‘work’ to be getting on with this week including designs for three new projects. One of the benefits of lockdown seems to have been that people are thinking about their gardens so much more and really want to improve their outdoor spaces. It doesn’t matter what the size of your garden is, with the right planting it can become a haven from the outside world. Everybody (or anybody) reading this blog already knows this fact of course, but for the benefit of any new or potential converts.
Anyway, enough of the waffle, here are my Six on Saturday for this week from my little haven.
1.This is a hardy fuchsia I bought last year. I’m not a huge fan of fuchsias but they are very reliable for late summer colour and I remember my mum growing this one.
2. I don’t think agapanthus were very popular in this country when I was a child and my mum definitely never grew them. Only a few varieties were available in those far off days and they were mostly considered too delicate for the cold winters of the 1960s. I’ve had this one in a container for about 6 years and after surviving a dramatic repotting experience last year, resulting in the demise of the pot, it has about 20 blooms on the one plant. Agapanthus Twister is sadly not showing the same promise at present.
I quite like the wafty grass behind the agapanthus (nasseem tenuisima) and gaura will be joining the party soon. The penstemon is a bit too red for this corner and will be going to new location next year as will the white phlox in the background.
3. This is my latest purchase from Bluebell Cottage Gardens https://www.bluebellcottage.co.uk/ last Saturday. I want a good clump of these to replace the aforementioned white phlox, but this little one will do for now.
4. Geranium Rozanne is doing a great job of taking over this bit of the border.
5. But the star geranium of the week award has to go to Ann Folkhard. Somewhere in the middle of this lovely tangle is a weigela!
6. And last but not least, the astrantia are still going strong after 2 months of non stop flowering.
I hope you’ve enjoyed a quick look at my garden highlights and for more ‘sixes’ take a look at the site of the creator of this weekly collection. His Six on Saturday is always an excellent read and there are many more photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
