My Little Garden 18th March 2023
I’m starting my blog this week with something that’s not exactly garden related, but my excuse is that the first sighting happened when I was in the garden. An army of Starship Robots has been deployed to carry out deliveries from my local Co-op, and they are trundling up and down the road to the delight of old and young. Our local Facebook Group is reporting daily on their adventures, which range from getting stuck on kerbs and dithering on zebra crossings to robot standoffs when they pass each other in the street. Normally sensible people have been spotted talking to them and taking photographs. And it’s not even April Fools day!
But back to the safer territory of gardening, and it’s good to see the daffodils putting in an appearance this week. They’ve had to contend with rain, sleet, frost, and hailstones that have made the conditions anything but spring-like, but they’re made of tough stuff. I’m really hoping we see some warmer weather next week, and a dry day tomorrow would be especially welcome as I’m planning a trip to Cholmondeley Castle for their Mothering Sunday daffodil event.
Thanks to the ‘orrible weather, my six on Saturday is a mixed bunch, and I’ll start with:
- Hailstones
I really wasn’t expecting these on Tuesday.
My poor little daffodils.
2. Stripy crocus.
Just when they’d opened up in the morning sunshine, black clouds gathered, and they were battered by the aforementioned frozen little balls.
3. Hebe
A recent purchase to replace the Myrtus Flambeau that I lost over winter. Hebe ‘Magic Summer’ is a beautiful shade of pink, and hopefully it will be a suitable replacement.
4. Aquilegia
Lots of lovely spring growth.
5. Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’
The metal heron was also determined to get in the photo.
6. Bleeding Heart
This ridiculously early flowerer survived the wintry weather quite well and is still going strong.
Hopefully, we’re all getting through the wintry weather and heading into proper spring next week. For more tales of the garden, head to Jim’s blog and the #sixonsaturday hashtag on Twitter:
