My Little Garden 18th Sept 2021

According to the weather forecast it was supposed to be raining most of this week, but we’ve hardly seen a drop of the stuff. On Wednesday, it was a particularly glorious September day and I took myself off to Dunham Massey to see how the gardens were looking. It’s good to have a little more time to myself now the girls are back at school and I like to leave a weekday free for garden visiting treats. Dunham was looking very colourful as always and I saw so many butterflies enjoying the sedum (or whatever it should be called). Now I know where the Painted Ladies have been hiding.

Talking of butterflies, I have decided to remove the buddleja in my garden. Apart from the odd Red Admiral, it is largely ignored in favour of the neighbours common purple variety, and I could use the space so much better. A job for this weekend.

On Wednesday, thinking it might be the last nice day, I took the photos for this week’s Six on Saturday, and I’m pleased that my garden is still looking pretty colourful too.

  1. Echinacea and friend

Not content with trying to munch their way through all my dahlia leaves, the snails apparently like the echinacea flowers. I’m really pleased with this variety called Green Envy so I hope it survives the winter ok.

2. Salvia

Amethyst Lips has been a bit of a disappointment in the flower department this year, but I’ve taken cuttings and we’ll see how we get on next year.

3. Roses

Gertrude J is having a last little flourish.

4. Signs of autumn

The amelanchier leaves are starting to show their autumn colours.

5. Geraniums

I really like the magenta colour of Anne Thomson. The flowers just pop up and wrap themselves around other plants all through the summer.

6. Buzzing

And all the asters are literally buzzing with bees and hoverflies. The perfect perennial for late summer.

And that concludes another week of floral snippets from my little garden. Soon it will be that difficult time of year when finding six ‘things' will seem like an impossible task, but for now there’s still lots to enjoy.
