My Little Garden 19th November 2022
I’m writing this on Friday afternoon, and it seems there’s a little doubt as to whether I’ll be sharing on Twitter or Mastodon. If you fancy tooting rather than tweeting you can find me at the address of my new second home. @renaissancegd@mastodonapp.uk Will it be permanent: who knows….
I’ve probably mentioned this before, but November is not my favourite month, and it doesn’t help that there’s been so much rain this week. When I finally got out in the garden to do a bit of a tidy up prior to planting tulip bulbs, the ground was very wet, so the bulbs will have to wait a little while longer. They’re taking up space in the garage, so I’m getting a little impatient now.
So what else is happening in my soggy little garden. Here’s my six for this week.
- Penstemon
I was quite surprised to see buds on this Penstemon before I went on holiday, and here it is blooming away at the end of November. Hopefully it will survive the winter as I haven’t taken cuttings. Or maybe there’s still time.
2. Cotinus
Not many leaves still clinging on, but what there are very attractive.
3. Wallflower
Winter Orchid is still going strong, but will it survive the winter? It’s not as robust as Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ and I lost the one I had last year, but it’s been worth trying again because of the long lasting flowers.
4. Hydrangea
The brown colour of November. If we get a bit of snow this year it will look rather pretty, and of course the flower heads will remain all winter to protect next year’s buds.
5. Fuchsia
Still with the odd flower or two. As it doesn’t have a name, I suspect it isn’t hardy so I need to find somewhere for it to live over winter. And no I didn’t take cuttings, which was rather remiss of me.
6. Mahonia
The best thing about November in terms of flowers, is this mahonia. A fabulous shrub and it brightens up even the darkest corner.
And there you have it. I suspect that next week is going to be a struggle in terms of finding anything interesting to share, but we’ll see. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the Six on Saturday blogs including that of Jim our new leader. https://gardenruminations.co.uk/2022
Have a great weekend and thank you for reading.
