My Little Garden 19th Sept 2020
What a gorgeous week it’s been. September often seems to be generous with it’s sunshine and on my wedding anniversary last Tuesday the weather was every bit as glorious as it had been on the big day itself. In reality the husband departed to play golf shortly after 9 am and I ‘had’ to buy my own bunch of flowers, but apart from that it was a very happy day with time to spend in the garden.
Whilst I’ve started to think about autumn this week, it’s also been a time to enjoy the last few days of summer. Some of the garden is starting to fade, but I have just about enough late summer / autumn plants to keep it looking interesting. And it’s been good to plan some little changes for spring.
My choices for this week still have a summer theme but I suspect that next week it could be a little different.
1. This is a very last appearance for this anemone which I will be attempting to dig up as soon as it has finished flowering. It has really taken over the garden, as anemones tend to do when they are happy, but I have too much pink and that needs to be rectified. I never bother to deadhead it as I think the bobbles always look quite pretty in their own right.
2. This is a plant that I’ve gone off a bit in the last two years. It’s an easy option if you want long lasting colour in a garden, and it certainly attracts the bees and the butterflies, but every garden seems to have one…… including mine!
3. On a morning when there was a touch of autumn in the air, I caught this penstemon just as the sun reached it and before the dew had evaporated. I’ve been really pleased with this one compared with Penstemon ‘Sour Grapes’ which has failed to give me a single flower this year. A superb colour but I confess I haven’t taken any cuttings. Please don’t tell The Propagator!
4. I succumbed to the temptation of an autumn purchase and this is a little cyclamen that found it’s way into my shopping trolley.
5. The garden star of the week is probably this lovely gaura that I bought earlier this year. I wasn’t sure whether I’d like it as much as the white one but I do!
It’s a mass of delicate little pink and white flowers and yes I know I said I have too much pink but this one is worth keeping.
6. And if you ignore what’s happening in the real world for a moment or two, this blue sky just about sums up a perfect September day.
And that’s my Six On Saturday for this week. Links to lots more ‘sixes’ can be found on the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection, and there are many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
