My Little Garden 1st Jan 2022
Here we are on the first day of the new year. Resolutions may have been made (or not), but the year is a blank canvas waiting to be painted. I’ve heard the phrase ‘painting with plants’ a few times recently and I’m not sure who said it first, but I can’t wait to get painting in my garden.
Shoots are starting to pop up in the pots and the borders and despite the miserable wet weather of December there is colour to be found in quiet corners. I’ve been out hunting for suitable specimens for the first Six on Saturday of 2022 and I was pleasantly surprised with what I found.
- Hellebores
Hellebore x ericsmithii ‘HGC Monte Cristo’ is always the first to get going in my garden. I like the fact that it’s evergreen leaves never really get tatty and it produces so many delightful winter flowers.
2. Mahonia
Perfect for a splash of bright yellow in a dark corner. One sunny day the week before Christmas it had a few buzzy visitors.
3. Rose
This one is definitely a tryer. Rosa Ballerina is still trying to produce more flowers.
4. Foliage
I’ve never really thought about featuring this little evergreen before, but Euonymus ‘Emerald Gaiety’ is a reliable compact shrub that has a pretty pink tinge to the leaves in winter.
5. Bulbs in pots
Iris Alida is coming along nicely. I must check when they flowered last year.
6. Bulbs in the borders
This is a early snowdrop called Galanthus reginae-olgae. It was given to me last spring by John Bent whose garden I wrote about in the first of a series of features for Cheshire Life Magazine. I’ve never had a snowdrop open for Christmas before and it was so exciting to see. Hopefully they’ll clump up a bit for next year.
