My Little Garden 20th Jan 2024

If you read the blog last week, you might remember that I was dithering about a witch-hazel. A bit of a ‘should I or shouldn’t I’ situation, with the option of a decent sized shrub at £50 or a twig with no suggestion of life at £16. Whilst I was dithering, I popped into another local garden centre and spotted one at £59.99 so I immediately convinced myself that the middle option seemed a good compromise. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ came home with me.

The day after, we had snow, which is a bit of a rare occurrence here, but happened on the same week last year. No surprise then, that it’s going to be a bit of a snowy six this week.

  1. Snowdrop

I bought three little pots of Galanthus elwesii in December, and timing its arrival for the snow, here’s the first flower.

2. Sky

This is the top of the cotinus, which needs cutting back a little this year, with snow on last year’s fluffy flower skeletons.

3. Catkins

Next to the cotinus, providing a screen at the end of the garden is Garrya eliptica ‘James Roof’ covered in snowy catkins.

4. Frozen

The metal heron has had its beak frozen in the water bowl. The ice was too solid to break.

5. Witch-hazel

Isn’t it a beauty. It’s going to stay in a pot for now as I don’t want to disturb the bulbs in its permanent location until they’ve flowered.

6. Mahonia

Still providing a bold splash of yellow in the corner.

The snow disappeared by late Wednesday, to be replaced by a severe frost, but now warmer weekend weather is promised. Time for all my little bulbs to get a move on as we head towards the end of January.

Have a great weekend and thanks for reading.
