My Little Garden 21st Dec 2024

For my last Six On Saturday until January, I’m continuing to look back at the highlights (and lowlights) of 2024.

It was such a wet summer that I rarely needed to water anything except the containers (is that a high or a low?). In fact, the only hot spell was when we headed off to Iceland, and that just about sums up July and August.

I lost quite a few plants to the slugs and snails, including some well established perennials like echinacea, but I had a new planter on wheels that the slimy monsters couldn’t climb. They won a few battles, but I didn’t surrender.

Despite the trials and tribulations of 2024, I’m already looking forward to the new year, but first, the look back…..

July

I was given a huge clump of Geranium ‘Mrs Kendall Clarke’, which according to my google research is believed to have been named after Lucretia Hasseltine Kendall Clark (1853-1937) who sent a plant to Ingwersen Nursery for them to propagate. It’s a gorgeous geranium and I should be able to do a spot of propagation myself in spring.

August

I feel I need to include a rose in my six choices, and this is the lovely Rosa ‘The Generous Gardener’.

September

The butterflies were missing over July and August, but in the dry and warm September, we had a few welcome visitors. The Verbena bonariensis was a very popular flower.

October

I bought Aster frikartii ‘Monch’ to replace one that I’d lost. It will live (and hopefully survive) over winter in a sheltered spot ready to plant out next year.

November

The leaves of Cotinus ‘Golden Lady’ are a delight in early November and then suddenly they are gone.

December

I’ve bought a couple of hellebores recently, and this one is ‘Early Princess’

And that’s it from me. I don’t mention very often these days, but the current host of Six on Saturday is Jim https://gardenruminations.co.uk/category/six-on-saturday/

His blog is on WordPress but he’s not on social media so it’s worth subscribing to read about his garden in Cornwall.

Happy Christmas and see you in January.
