My Little Garden 21st May 2022
The tulips may be over, well almost, but the first of the alliums have arrived to take their place. I have a mix of Purple Sensation, Christophii and Purple Rain, which has a similar shape to Christophii but is closer to Purple Sensation in terms of colour.
As this has been a quieter week, I’ve had time to tend to my little garden, so the tulips have mostly been dug up and I’ve got plans afoot to dig up a bit more lawn. This needs to be done when the husband is out playing golf, and maybe, just maybe, he won’t notice when he gets home. I’m excavating a bit of grass around a paved circle so that it still has an ‘entrance’ but will be surrounded with a mix of grasses and perennials. It’s very satisfying in a small garden to create a bit of extra planting space, and although the family think I’m slightly bonkers I think it will look good.
My six choices this week definitely have a summer feel to them but I’ll start with the very last of the tulips.

I’m really pleased with this single late tulip that eventually decided to join Ronaldo and Green Wave, and next year I will planting to more to light up darkish corner where I made space for Leucojum and Camassia last autumn.
2. Gertrude Jekyll
This rose is coming along nicely with lots of flowers and even more buds. A delightful fragrance when I sit on my swing seat.
3. Talking of swing seats
Ernest Markham has put on growth spurt and become very friendly with the aforementioned swing seat. I need to gently detach him and point him the right direction.
4. Aquilegia
This is Kristall, who is very beautiful and flowers for absolutely ages.
5. Bee friendly
Because it was National Bee Day yesterday, it would be very remiss of me not to include a photo of one. My garden is very bee friendly but it’s typical when you only have a brief time to take photos for Six on Saturday they all bunk off. The Cirsium rivulare atropurpureum is usually buzzing!
6. Painted Lady
I was intending to include another allium shot, but I spotted this rather battered Painted Lady butterfly on the Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ and I couldn’t leave it out could I. Back to alliums again next week.
