My Little Garden 22nd August 2020

This week I’ve been on a wet and windy trip to the Lake District, visited an amazing garden on the way (more on that in a separate blog) and rather excitingly, become a probationary member of the Garden Media Guild. With regard to the latter I clearly need to up both my photography and blogging game now, but I hope it will lead to new opportunities and new friendships.

Whilst I was away on my ‘big’ holiday (all of 48 hours) I have been slightly worried that the garden would suffer from the forecast wind and rain. Fortunately, there have only been minor casualties and the sunflower is still intact. Phew!

I always think that a ‘few’ (not the Storm Ellen type) raindrops work wonderfully in garden photos and the antirrhinums in the header photo are a case in point. An impulse buy when the garden centres first reopened, they are still going strong. I also have another couple of annuals to share this week which I grew from seed. Now this isn’t a completely alien concept for me, but growing from seed is normally just a case of a few cosmos. However, inspired by the Propagator, a little progress has been made.

Here are my six Saturday choices for this week…..

1.Firstly, I am very happy that the sunflower has survived. It’s over 2 metres high or 7 feet if you prefer. I wasn’t sure what colour it was going to be as the first plants that I grew from seed turned out to be yellow and quite compact, even though they all came from the same packet of seed. This one I think is most definitely Helianthus annuus ‘Evening Sun’ as it says on the packet. The main flower is partially obscured but hopefully I’ll be able to get a better photo when the other buds open.

Here it is in close up a few days ago.

2. The second annual that I grew from seed this year was zinnia for no other reason than I had a free packet of seed from Gardener’s World Mag. I planted them quite late so they are only just coming into flower now and the colours will be a surprise as the seeds came from a mixed packet.

I think they look great at various stages of flower opening.

From bud…

To petal opening…..

To full flower.

3. Going back to raindrops, my salvia seems to have revived and is looking good again.

Salvia ‘Amethyst Lips’

4. The anthemis is still going strong with lots of flowers still to come.

Anthemis tinctoria ‘E.C. Buxton’

5. These butterfly magnets are flowering away even if it’s a little damp for the butterflies themselves.

Aster × frikartii ‘Mönch’

6. And finally, this is one of the better photos I managed to get of the thalictrum in the rain.

I promise that this is the last week of attempted thalictrum pics but isn’t it just beautiful?

Thalictrum delavayi ‘Hewitt’s Double’

And that’s my Six On Saturday for this week. Links to lots more ‘sixes’ can be found on the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection, and there are many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
