My Little Garden 22nd May 2021

There’s been a fair bit of excitement in the gardening world this week. A rather impressive new garden opened in Salford and of course I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go and see RHS Bridgewater for myself. After a little preview two weeks ago, when the cafe and shop opened, it was fantastic to be able to see the gardens themselves. The walled gardens are huge and the spring planting is particularly delightful with camassia, geum and early geraniums blooming in the Paradise Garden. The summer planting looks like it’s going to be pretty special too!

Anyway, from big gardens to little ones and it’s been just as exciting (well almost)to see how my garden has come on after a week of sunshine and showers.

  1. Alliums

As the tulips fade away, it’s the turn of the alliums to put on a show and this female Orange-tip butterfly certainly seemed to be appreciating them. More on alliums next week.

2. Rose buds

I think Gertrude Jekyll is going to win the race of the roses this year.

3. Weigela

I love the foliage on this little Weigela Monet: pink and green are such a pretty combination. The flowers aren’t very exciting but that doesn’t really matter.

4. The last Tulips of 2021

As much as I love tulips, it’s time for them to make way for other flowers. Until next year then….

5. Wallflowers

The colours of this perennial wallflower Erysimum ‘Winter Orchid are really zingy and unlike it’s biennial relatives, it will carry on flowering for weeks if not months.

6. Aquilegia

This is the pale and elegant Aquilegia ‘Kristall’ that I bought in lockdown last spring.

It’s much more sophisticated than the flamboyant Aquilegia ‘Rose Ivory’.

And definitely a class above the common pink one that seeds around everywhere.

It’s the end of another busy week and I just wish it would stop raining Maybe the glimmer of hope we’ve been given for next week will come to fruition. Fingers and toes will be crossed.

If you want to find out what’s happening elsewhere around the gardening world, come rain or shine, take a look at the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection. And as always there are many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
