My Little Garden 23rd Nov 2024

It has been a tad chilly this week, exacerbated by the contrast of our ten days of sunshine in the Canaries. Thermals were required for the start of tulip bulb planting, but the pots have been done. Thankfully, this was quite a quick process, as I prepared them with compost and grit a few weeks ago, leaving them out to tease the squirrel(s). He/she (I’ve only ever seen one) had a root round when we were away, but obviously found nothing, and I checked I wasn’t being watched when the bulbs went in. Or maybe he/she was watching through binoculars!

My six this week isn’t a particularly colourful one, but here we go.

  1. Cyclamen

An unlabelled, supposedly hardy variety that I didn’t hold out much hope for, but which has done pretty well as an emergency gap filler. I wish I’d also put some in the winter hanging basket.

2. Cotinus

I took this photo as much for the blue sky as the leaves.

3. Geranium renardii

I really like the leaves of this pretty little geranium, and they suit a dusting of frost.

4. Choisya

Not the ideal moment to produce a late flower.

5. Frosty grass

Pennistum ‘Flamingo’ is still standing pretty well around the water bowl.

6. Fuchsia

November flowers are always welcome, and Fuchsia ‘Delta’s Sarah’ is really giving value for money. Having said that, this photo was taken on Wednesday, and it doesn’t look quite as good now.

November has raced away after my little break. Next week sees the start of work at the back of the house to replace some old papers and gravel, and that means that I have to temporarily rehome a couple of plants and move some pots. At least I should have something to show you next week.

Have a good weekend, and I hope Storm Bert doesn’t cause too many problems.
