My Little Garden 23rd Sept 2023

What a miserable week it’s been in terms of rain, rain and more rain. Where are the mists and mellow fruitfulness that make autumn a season of joy. Nowhere to be seen at the moment, that’s for sure.

It’s not all been doom and gloom though. I’ve been cracking on with a planting plan, and I went to see a lovely couple on Friday to talk about their garden for a future Cheshire Life Magazine feature.

Due to the inclement weather, there haven’t been many decent photo opportunities in my garden, but I managed to dash out with the camera in a dry interlude to find six ‘somethings’ for Saturday.

  1. A very hungry spider

After the birthday ‘Build a Bear’ expedition with granddaughter number three last Saturday, we spent a bit of time in the garden. Imogen is fascinated by spiders, and we spotted this beauty patrolling it’s quite extensive domain. There was a bit of a crisis when an unfortunate bee flew into the web and was immediately pounced upon by the very speedy Mrs Hairy Legs. Being an intrepid granny and granddaughter team, we rescued the bee, and it got to live another day. The spider sulked for a bit and then munched on something it caught earlier, so all was well.

2. Sedum

Better known as Hylotelephium ‘Matrona’.

3. Aster

This Symphyotrichum ‘Samoa’ was an impulse buy last year, and it’s in completely the wrong place. The flower colour is lovely, but there’s far too much boring dark green foliage for where I planted it, especially as the flowers appear so late.

This area will see major changes next year.

4. This week’s zinnia

I’ve run out of colours now, so this is the last appearance for the zinnias.

5. Hydrangea

The ‘shooting star’ one is getting red spots as the flowers age.

6. Rusty water

A few weeks back, I mentioned that I had bought a rusty metal water bowl to sit in the middle of an old paved circle. Most of the planting around it hasn’t happened yet, but I’m really pleased with its potential. And I’m becoming quite a fan of emergency begonias which never stop flowering whatever the weather.

And that’s it from me. Have a good weekend, fellow gardeners, and please don’t do any more rain dances.
