My Little Garden 24th April 2021

I seem to have spent a lot of time plant shopping and spending other people’s money this week. A very nice way to make a living although by the time I’ve finished all my planting jobs I will be quite glad of a few days off to do more in my own garden. Fortunately, apart from weeding and watering (when was the last time it rained?) it can look after itself for now and I can just enjoy the spring colour.

It was good to go back to Bluebell Cottage Gardens on Thursday to pick up an order for a couple of clients. And of course it would have been rude of me, on a delightful spring day, not to take a stroll around the garden at the same time. The tulips are looking fabulous and the herbaceous planting is poised waiting to take off when the frosts end and someone with influence does a rain dance or two. The bluebell woods are a couple of weeks off their best yet, but fortunately I have to return for yet more plants at exactly the right time. Now how did I arrange that….

In my own temporarily neglected garden, the spring bulbs are still springing, the trees are blossoming, and I can hear lots of happy tweeting and buzzing from the little visitors. Such a wonderful time of year! It would be very tempting to focus on tulips for my six on Saturday this week, but as they’ll be around for at least another couple of weeks, I’m not going to. So, what to choose when the tulips are the stars…..

  1. Blossom

Let’s start with some blossom. The buds of this crab apple are a beautiful deep pink.

But then they open out to pale pink and white. Absolutely lovely and I’m so happy I have this tree.

2. Daffs

This is Narcissus ‘Bell Song’ that I posted a picture of last week. It’s a small daffodil with a lovely peachy pink cup.

In the middle of the clump however, is a mystery daff of the same colour with a double cup. It’s rather nice, but what is it?

3. Muscari

It’s coming to the end of muscari time, but I thought they deserved a final slot in the Saturday show and tell.

I even had a bedraggled visitor to one of the ordinary blue ones.

4. Dahlias

As this is my first year of growing dahlias, I’m quite pleased with how well this one is growing. I’m really hoping that Verrone’s Obsidian lives up to expectations.

5. Pasque Flower

I love these little pulsatilla. My one and only specimen is in a very sheltered spot but I noticed that others had been badly affected by frost in a garden I was working in this week.

6. Tulips

And bringing up the rear is my new favourite tulip. I couldn’t leave them out entirely could I. Earlier in the week I posted a picture on twitter and commented that the colour was a little different to the pictures I had seen. Well, over the course of a few days the pink deepened and isn’t Tulipa Virichic just gorgeous!

And that’s it for another week.

To find out what’s happening elsewhere take a look at the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection. And as always there are many more excellent photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
