My Little Garden 24th Feb 2024

There have been a couple of sunny interludes this week, but mainly, it has just rained and rained. VERY HEAVILY. Add to that gusty winds that have flattened a few of the early daffodils, and it hasn’t been the best time for gardening.

Whilst I’ve been mostly indoors, I’ve noticed that the blackbirds have been busy collecting nesting material. It seems a little early, but it’s been so mild they must think it’s March already. They may get a shock this weekend when temperatures drop.

Despite the miserable conditions, there have been lots of growth spurts in the garden. Whilst the snowdrops and most of the iris reticulata have finished for the year, the daffodils are starting to take their place, and everything is showing signs of life. Good news for my Six on Saturday hunt.

  1. Pulmonaria

It’s always good to see the first flowers on this trusty perennial, and if it stops raining, the early pollinators should be happy.

2. Camellia ‘Brushfields Yellow’

The camellia bud that I showed you last week has turned into a flower.

3. Prunus Kojo-no-mai

This was a bit of a surprise, but the first flowers have appeared on Prunus Kojo-no-mai which was moved to my front garden last autumn.

4. Lamprocapnos

I also shared the first growth on my Bleeding Heart/Dicentra/Lamprocapnos last week and commented how daft it had been last year to have a flower in January. Well, lo and behold, here we are with the signs of a February flower.

5. Primroses

To compensate for the fact that a pot of dwarf daffodils failed completely, I bought a little tray of spring bedding to fill in a gap.

6. Daffs

A little group of Narcissus Tête-à-tête are brightening up the gloomy corner, with more coming through elsewhere.

I’m keeping fingers crossed that we see an end to the rain soon, but whilst I’m waiting I’m going to start some tomato seeds on the windowsill.

Have a great weekend, and thanks for reading.
