My Little Garden 25th July 2020
This week was always going to be a busy one and it began with an early start on Monday morning and the arrival of my two eldest granddaughters. Fortunately the rain held off and after the home schooling session was completed we headed off for a bit of nature exploring. This is always great fun and we made a few little videos while we were out. Abby, the 7 year old, is fascinated with photography and films and she provided me with a little bit of film to share for Gardens Hour on Twitter. Her efforts got far more ‘Likes’ than my Tweets usually do and we were both very pleased. I suspect it might have to become a regular thing.
The rest of the week involved finishing off design sketches for some new clients as well as a trip to Tatton Park Farm with the nearly 4 year old granddaughter. Well you can’t say my week hasn’t been varied!
And as I write this on Friday evening (just prior to the start of Gardeners World) I’ve also received an email from a client in Styal to say she was “thrilled” with my designs. Feedback like this is just fabulous and makes an already fantastic job even better.
Anyway, moving on…… what’s been happening in my little garden this week.
1.This is the clematis I bought from Bud Garden Centre in the week before lock down. It gave me flowers at the beginning of April and since then it’s really put on a growth spurt with a couple of new blooms as well. I think it’s safe to say it has settled in well.
2. The roses are also starting to flower again. All have new buds but this one, which is the oldest rose in the garden, won the race. It usually produces flowers right into autumn but they get paler as the weather gets cooler.
3. Always the first of the asters to flower, this one is a real butterfly magnet and possibly my favourite. Unfortunately, it’s fighting for survival with some thuggish Japanese anemones and not looking as promising as it did last year. Next spring I will be digging them all up and removing the anemones!
4. And talking of butterfly magnets, you can’t beat a buddleia. Interestingly they always seem to prefer my neighbour’s common purple one but I still get plenty of butterfly visitors. I am not very patiently waiting for the first of the Painted Ladies to arrive.
5. I’m happy about two things in this picture. Firstly the ladybird visitor, which I hope has a good appetite for aphids, and secondly the colour of this achillea.
6. The colour of the other achillea has also grown on me. It fades to a very pretty coral pink and there may be a place for both of them. At the moment, it’s mingling nicely with this very pretty anemone and propping up the sanguisorba which has suffered from a bit of rain damage in the last couple of weeks.
