My Little Garden 25th Nov 2023

After a week enjoying record-breaking November temperatures in Tenerife, it was a bit of a shock to the system when we returned to a wet and windy UK. But with batteries recharged I was anxious to crack on with the planting of the tulip bulbs, which have been taking up space on the temporary table in the garage.

The beginning of the week went well, but then I made the mistake of calling in to the garden centre. They had half-price bulbs, and I probably don’t need to spell out what happened next. In my defence, some tulip bulbs I’d ordered online were unavailable, so I was a bit short. Not something to be mentioned to the husband who despairs of any garden purchases he deems unnecessary. Oh dear…..

In other news, I confess I was a little worried that I wouldn’t have anything to show you for Six on Saturday, but happily I’ve managed to scrape a few ‘things’ together.

  1. Pyracantha

It was a bit of a surprise to find that there were still berries left. Maybe the blackbirds are saving them for a Christmas treat.

2. Snowdrop

Galanthus reginae-olgae is always early, but this year, I hadn’t even cleared away the geranium leaves from where the little clump slumbers through the summer. The flower stalks are leggier than normal because they had to fight their way through the undergrowth. Maybe I need to move them to a better position for next year.

3. Winter scent

Now that most of the leaves are on the ground, I have a better view of these viburnum flowers. ‘Charles Lamont’ is beautifully scented and resides next to the swing seat, where the odd outdoor winter cuppa is enjoyed.

4. Autumn gold

A lovely shade on the leaves of Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ prior to the orange stems of winter.

5. Blue sky and catkins

As blue as the sky in Tenerife, although the temperatures were a little lower.

6. Toadstools in the grass

Judging by the size and number of these, it’s been raining a bit whilst we were away.
