My Little Garden 26th August 2023

This week, I got a five-star award. Not for a garden design or a planting plan, not for a photo shoot or a piece of written work. It was a much more special award from grandaughter number three, who pronounced my first attempt at Apple and Blackberry jam, ‘the best jam ever’. As Imogen is a very discerning jam taster, this was praise indeed, and I shall bask in my success all weekend.

While the blackberries have been abundant this year, I’ve had mixed results in the garden, with some plants doing particularly well and others that are still ‘thinking about it’ at the end of August. In other words, my six for the last Saturday of the month is a bit of a mixed bunch.

  1. Verbena

Verbena bonariensis seeds itself everywhere, but this year, it was so late to get growing, that I’m wondering whether some will make it to the flowering stage.

2. Rosa ‘Ballerina’

This has done really well and is currently in full bloom again.

3. Pyracantha

An early taste of autumn with berry laden shrub that does its best to hide a fence panel.

4. Aster

The first flowers on Aster amellus ‘Veilchenkonigin’ are a bit late this year, in common with a couple of other ‘asters’. Hopefully, this means September will be a colourful month!

5. The wrong geranium

This was supposed to be Geranium plenum, but it’s most definitely not. Happily Farmer Gracy respond very quickly and I have a credit to spend on a replacement next year.

In the meantime I need to find a home for them, and I really hope that the variety isn’t one that I’ll never be able to get rid of.

6. Anemone

Finally, little miss Frilly Knickers has got over her shyness.

And it’s goodbye to another year of August Saturday sixes. What will September bring I wonder?

Have a great bankholiday weekend and hopefully it won’t rain all the time.
