My Little Garden 27th March 2021

It’s been a funny old week. I’ve broken a trowel (sympathy required), tweaked my back (even more sympathy required) and bought a very expensive pair of gardening trousers (I don’t normally spend that much on a dress!) But I’ve seen my first butterfly of the season (no photo because I couldn’t find my phone in the hundreds of pockets in my new trousers) and there’s been a pleasing amount of spring sunshine.

I’ve also been to the garden centre and bought a pansy, amongst a few other essentials, which brings me nicely to the first of my six choices for the week.

1. Pansies

The pansies that I bought last autumn that would normally be gearing up for a spring flourish right now, are looking a bit sorry for themselves. So as I was accidentally passing the garden centre I bought a new one to give them something to aspire to.

2. Triffid

The speed at which this thalictrum grows always amazes me. It disappears underground for the winter and then puts on about two inches a day in spring. I was going to move it as I really need to add more permanent height in this spot, but it’s had a reprieve until autumn.

3. Cherry

In contrast to the triffid, this dinky little cherry tree is the perfect size for a pot.

4. Hyacinths

I really like the stage with hyacinths when you can see the flower but they haven’t grown so big they flop over. And I had forgotten that they were mixed colours, which is a very pleasant surprise.

5. Anemone Blanda

These follow on from the snowdrops in the shady part of the garden. Maybe I need to call it the white garden, but then again it goes a bit pink and blue in summer……

6. Daffs

The narcissi are all coming out to play now, including one variety that I really don’t remember planting.

Jack Snipe is one of my favourites.

And Jetfire is definitely a very cheerful sight.

But what this tall interloper is doing I really don’t know, and there are others of it’s kind! I’m sure I planted Tulipa ‘Spring Green’ here.
