My Little Garden 28th May 2022
The last few weeks have flown by and it’s hard to believe that here we are at the end of May. Work is nice and steady at the moment with a manageable number of design jobs and an exciting photography project that will keep me busy over the summer months. Add a bit (sometimes quite a lot) of grandchild care into the mix and I suspect that free time might be hard to find. Just as well then that it’s half term next week and I’m child free for seven whole days. I’m planning a trip to an NGS open garden tomorrow and a return to Chatsworth mid week. I visited with the Garden Media Guild last September and the changes led by landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith were very impressive. I can’t wait to see the late spring colours.
In my little garden, the last of the tulips have been removed, and late spring favourites have sprung up to take their place. I also have some newcomers for 2022, and the first of these is my first choice for Six on Saturday this week.
- Iris
Last autumn, I decided that I’d try out some more iris in the garden. The first was Dutch Iris ‘Eye of the Tiger’ which at the moment is interesting but not quite as lovely as the online image suggested.
The second is Iris x hollandica ‘Alaska’ which I really like and want more of for next year.
2. Alliums
The photo that I didn’t post last week of Allium ‘Purple Rain’. I seem to have a thing for white flowers at the moment, so I think a tall white allium might be put on the ever growing list of bulbs to buy and plant in autumn.
3. Where lawn used to be ….
I wasn’t too drastic with my lawn removal project, in fact I think that I was a little bit tentative last weekend. For now though I’ve planted a good clump of Catananche caerulea (Cupid’s Dart) and some Nassella tenuissima. We’ll see how it looks in a few weeks time.
4. Verbascum x hybrida ‘Southern Charm’
I picked this up at RHS Bridgewater a few weeks ago. The picture on the label, and the description, suggested that it would be cream rather than pink but I still rather like it. It’s not a tall verbascum but it’s still flopping over a bit in the wind this week.
5. Dahlia
This one is due to go to a client this morning but it’s rather lovely and I’m tempted to get one for myself. Always the problem when plant shopping for others!
6. Roses
Gertrude Jekyll has been flowering for a couple of weeks now, so it’s high time the others put a bit of effort in. This is Handel, but Ballerina is full of buds too.
