My Little Garden 28th Nov 2020

When I first started contributing on a regular basis to the Six on Saturday meme, it was back at the start of the first lockdown. Well week 3 actually, although I’ve since retrospectively rambled on about weeks one and two. At the time, I thought it might be interesting to have a bit of a lockdown diary and I had a passing thought about combining them into a larger garden ‘blog’ when everything returned to normal. As we are now in a second lockdown and due to emerge into the delights of Tier 3 next Wednesday (no difference from lockdown apart from shops open) it’s in danger of turning into a bit of a ‘big blog’, so instead I’m going to have a little look back month by month until some colour returns in the new year.

This week’s six is taking a bit of a liberty by mostly looking back at March 2020.

1.The little Wood anemones were blooming in the shady corner. I always forget exactly where these are until they pop up in spring, and all I can see at the moment is fallen leaves and the snowdrops just starting to break the surface.

The snowdrops don’t make for a very interesting photo right now, but here they are when I brushed the leaves away. And at least it shows I’ve been in the garden this week!

2. The daffodils were blooming away. The ones in the foreground are Jetfire and I planted more of this variety a few weeks ago. I tend to favour the dwarf varieties as there’s less leaf to look untidy in a small garden after the flowers have gone.

Here they are in close up. I especially like their orange trumpets.

3. Not a dwarf variety, but this is one of my favourite daffodils - the beautifully scented Narcissus actaea.

4. The Hellebores were in full bloom and I think this was the new one I bought last year.

It’s just starting to show some buds which is a bit of a relief as I left it in a pot all summer. It’s now in it’s new home in a border I reshaped a couple of weeks ago (more on that in the new year).

5. The little Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’ was doing it’s thing in the middle of the month. I should probably have repotted it so I hope it is as floriferous in spring 2021.

6. And one of my spring favourites is the Snakeshead fritillary. Obviously they look better when planted en masse but I sometimes put them in a pot for the first spring to make it easier to take photos. They then get planted in garden and I usually forget where they are until the following spring.

And that’s it for the first of my ‘look back to spring 2020’ in my little garden. It’s the perfect time of year to look back and review the successes and failures of the seasons and right now it’s also good to have something to look forward to as well. Next week it’s April and that means tulip time!!
