My Little Garden 2nd December 2023

Well, here we are in December, and I’m wondering where the year has gone. The bulbs have been planted, and the last three days have been cold and frosty. It’s properly winter now, and the countdown to Christmas has begun. Not that I consider myself a big fan of the festive season, but this year, I find myself looking forward to some twinkly lights and a mince pie or two.

You probably think it’s going to be all frosty pictures this week, but whilst I was tempted, there’s not really a lot going on in the garden apart from the white stuff. If I’d had my camera, or even my phone, to hand at the right time, I could have shown you a beautiful fox trying to break the ice on my water bowl. But by the time I found my phone, it was on its way, so this is the best I could do.

Anyway, in the absence of anything exciting happening in the garden, I thought I’d do a quick round up of 2023 over the next few weeks. These are my six for January to March.

  1. Hellebore

The white hellebore that I bought at the end of 2022 was flowering beautifully in January. I tend to put hellebores in a pot for the first year and then plant them out. I’m not totally sure where this one is as I have quite a few, so I’ll just have to wait for the flowers.

2. Snowdrops

The common Galanthus nivalis are just such a delight to see and a real highlight of January.

3. Iris

This was Harmony. They didn’t last very long, but what a beautiful blue for February.

4. Crocus

The yellow crocus are always the first to flower.

5. Wallflower

March sees Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ leap into action.

6. Penny’s Pink

And I’ll finish with another hellebore. Just a perfect plant for winter and easy spring colour.

Next week I’ll be sharing some of my favourites from April to June. In the meantime, have a great weekend.
