My Little Garden 2nd July 2022
How can we be in July already? This year is going far too fast for me and I don’t feel the garden has had anywhere near enough attention. I can see gaps that I fully intended to fill but haven’t, undersized dahlias being attacked by greedy slugs, and a mass of messiness in the south facing border. Ok, it’s quite pleasing messiness but I’m not sure everyone would approve.
One good thing to happen this week is that it has rained and freshened everything up, but even that has a downside with increased the slug activity. Do they grow in the rain as well? It certainly seems like it.
After my foray to the Front Garden last, I’m back in familiar territory for my six choices this week. Starting with ….
- Stachys
Stachys macranthra ‘Rosea’ was a new addition last year and as I planted quite late I didn’t get any flowers. It’s a pretty little perennial with flowers a bit like some of the wild orchids, and I’m curious to see how long lasting the blooms are. Will it make it to my list of favourites? We’ll see!
2. Messy border
Speaking of the messy border, here it is in all it’s glory. I’m really pleased with the nepeta and fortunately next door’s cat hasn’t found it. Geranium ‘Anne Thomson’ snakes her way through everything and is a nice to contrast to the blues of the salvia, agastache and aforementioned nepeta. There is a path, of sorts, between the perennials and the shrubs at the back which enables me to get at everything, and as the season progresses some of the blues will give way to yellow rudbeckia to join the anthemis on the far side.
3. Anemone
Anemone ‘Elfin Swan’, a small cousin in the ‘Dreaming Swan’ family resides on the far side of this border, and has just started to flower at the end of the week. I like to have some whites here to give a contrast to the dark foliage behind, and the anemones, astrantia and cosmos do the job very well.
4. Rose
I can’t let the first week of July pass without sharing one of my newish roses. The very popular and floriferous Rosa ‘The Generous Gardener’ fighting it out with Clematis ‘Remembrance’
5. Erigeron
Another plant that’s thriving right now is this little Erigeron karvinskianos. I have it in a pot with some Stipa tenuissima (or whatever it’s called now). The laziest summer pot ever!
6. Lantana
As I said the other week, I don’t grow many annual in pots, but I couldn’t resist this pretty little Lantana at the garden centre the other week.
