My Little Garden 31st July 2021
Someone definitely did an enthusiastic rain dance this week. Rain, hail, thunder, lightning and a mini tornado all happened when I was out buying plants for a client. And as I was driving home through some huge puddles / mini lakes, I was keeping my fingers crossed (not literally) that my new electric car would cope with the amount of water. Fortunately it did!
It’s also been the first week of the school holidays and I’ve had the girls over three days. It’s much harder work than gardening and now I’m looking forward to a day of planting by way of a rest. And when that’s done hopefully there’ll be time for my garden.
My six choices this week start with a late summer favourite that I’ve never grown in my garden before because it’s VERY yellow. It was a spare plant from a job in May so I stuck it in a container. No point in wasting a good plant.
- Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’
It seems to be happy in its pot although I doubt it will have as many flowers as it would have done had I planted it in a border. I expect I will need to find a new home for it next year.
2. Stachys officinalis ‘Hummelo’
I planted these last year because I wanted some pink or purple ‘vertical’ flowers to replace the pink salvia that never did that well. These are perfect and I’m so pleased with them I’m making space for a similar plant in another border. Stachys officinalis ‘Rosea' is being collected later today.
3. Hydrangea paniculata ‘Little Lime’
A fabulous little hydrangea that’s perfect for a small space. It takes on a pinkish tinge as the flowers age.
4. Rosa Ballerina
Such a pretty rose and it’s doing so well for it’s first year.
5. Buddleja Sugar Plum
I like the rich colour of this variety. Now all it needs is a few butterfly visitors.
6. Echinacea ‘Green Twister’
The bees love these flowers but surprisingly they where missing when I took this photo. I’m hoping that ‘Green Twister’ is as hardy as the pink purpurea varieties which seem to overwinter successfully.
Well that’s it for the last Saturday of July. It’s been a chilly few days, but hopefully summer will return soon.
