My Little Garden 3rd Feb 2024
Here we are in February, the days are slowly getting longer, and the garden is starting to come to life. Ok, in reality, spring is a long way off, but there’s so much cause for optimism and something new to find every day if you look hard enough. Going on garden patrol every morning is one of my favourite tasks, and the fact that we’ve had a couple of dry days this week is even better.
This is what I found for my contribution to Six on Saturday.
- Witch-hazel
My new purchase ‘Jelena’ is thriving and will make such a huge difference to winter interest for the garden in the years to come.
2. Sarcococca
‘Winter Gem’ lived in a pot for a couple of years, but now has a new home in the front garden.
3. The first iris
This was supposed to be ‘Alida’ but it isn’t. Clairette maybe? It’s quite pretty, but I much prefer Alida.
4. Crocus
Lots of Crocus sieberi ‘Firefly’ flowers have appeared now, but the complete lack of sun this week has meant they stayed well and truly closed….
until yesterday!
5. Snowdrops
A clump of Galanthus nivalis amongst the detritus of twigs and Japanese anemone leaves that survived the winter. And I spy a little cyclamen.
6. Hellebore
Ice N Roses looking fabulous, with a black plastic pot providing a perfect background for the photo. I’m sure professional photographers must use them as well.
Unlike many people, I love February with all it’s optimism and hints of spring. It’s also my birthday next week, and in years gone by women my age, in the UK, would have been receiving their state pension for five years now. Just imagine what I could do with that little lump sum right now. Luckily, I don’t need it, but what a difference it might make to millions of others in these difficult times.
Wishing you all a good weekend, and thanks for reading.
