My Little Garden 3rd June 2023

And just like that, here we are in June. Can we slow down, please, because I really want to stop and have time to enjoy early summer.

The family have all been away on their holidays this week, so I’ve been frantically trying to cram in all my other jobs, but I still have planting projects to complete today and Monday. It’s been such a dry May, with no rain for over two weeks, so I’m worried that people will forget to water their new plants and magically expect them to survive.

For weeks now, my garden has been a little neglected, but I have been watering, and everything is growing rapidly. All the roses are starting to bloom, and the next stage of perennials are poised to do their bit, but these are my six choices for the third of June.

  1. Clematis Bijou

A dinky little clematis that’s perfect for pots.

2. Foxglove

This is an area of the garden that seems to be a favourite spot for a very large orange cat to lie in wait for the birds. Lots of things have been trampled, so I’m pleased that this foxglove is coping. Just….

3. Geum

This yellow geum has done well, unlike ‘Mai Tai’ which has obstinately refused to produce flowers in the back garden this year. It seems to like the drier conditions in the front garden.

4. Iris ‘Flight of Butterflies’

I bought this as much for the name as anything else, but in it’s third year it’s trying hard to produce a decent amount of flowers. I’ve seen so many beautiful irises this year, but I’m not sure this would make my top ten.

5. Peony

If you only have room for one peony, how do you choose which one? It was a tricky decision, but I went for ‘Bowl of Beauty’ a few years ago. I wish the flowers lasted longer.

6. Swingseat

It’s a favourite place to sit, with Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ providing a lovely scent.

And that’s it from me. I’m off to plant a border for some lovely people who always have cake for elevenses. Funny how my favourite clients are the ones who provide the treats.

Have a great weekend.
