My Little Garden 4th Dec 2021
It would be wonderful to share some beautiful snowy photos of the garden this week, but despite a sprinkling of the white stuff, my little north facing garden is looking a bit sad. There is plenty of joy in prospect for the new year, but at the moment, even on a good day, the sun only reaches the far end of my garden.
The next couple of weeks will be a review of my favourite plants from 2021 so will be significantly more colourful. For today however, my six on Saturday choices will consist of fifty shades of brown…… I won’t blame you if you stop reading now!
- Snowy myrtus
This is a pretty little evergreen shrub, with variegated leaves and red stems, that works well with the red hellebores in winter and astrantia in the summer. Ugni molineau 'Flambeau’, to give it it’s full title, is supposed to be quite a delicate plant that requires a sheltered position and protection in winter. Clearly mine is made of sterner stuff because I’ve had it for years and it just gets on with life in semi shade.
2. Snowy grass
Nassella tenuissima looking a bit weighted down with the snow. I only cut this back in late winter / early spring so I can enjoy its waftiness through the winter.
3. Snowy asters
Aster amellus ‘Veilchenkonigin’ getting a new lease of snowy life.
4. Snowy echinacea
More winter brown temporarily prettified.
5. Snowy catkins
Garrya elliptica ‘James Roof’ is rarely seen in the garden centres these days, although it is available from online retailers. Apparently it is very prone to blackspot, but I seem to quite fortunate with mine, and the catkins are lovely.
6. December flowers
The mahonia is always a delight at this time of year with racemes resembling the tentacles of a mysterious sea creature. A touch of colour in a gloomy corner of the garden.
And that’s it for the first Saturday of December. If you’re still reading, thank you for persevering and I promise you more in the way of botanical colour next week.
Have a great weekend and please check out the other Six on Saturday blogs from around the world including the
