My Little Garden 4th Feb 2023
If I expected a miracle in the garden after being away for 10 days, then it didn’t happen. It’s hardly surprising really, given the miserable weather and the fact that I hadn’t done any proper gardening in the preceeding couple of weeks. I should at least have tried to make it look tidy, but couldn’t motivate myself in the cold and wet. Even the iris that had looked poised when I left (perhaps I was being over optimistic), are still just looking poised, or have possibly even regressed.
Still I’m always pleased to see the back of January, and even if spring is a long way off, there’s always winter flowers and snowdrop walks. Talking of which I walked down my garden to find the first of my #SixonSaturday choices for this week.
- Galanthus nivalis ‘flore pleno’
These were blowing around in the wind so not the best photo.
A close up of the inside of the flower.
2. Hellebore
This is Penny’s Pink which is getting going at last.
3. Winter scent
Fascinating pinky-red and white flowers on ‘Winter Gem’.
4. The crocus are coming
I grew Crocus sieberi ‘Firefly’ for the first time in a pot last year and then transferred them to the border. Apart from the common yellow one, they are the earliest to flower: a welcome sight at the start of February.
5. Cyclamen coum
These were an ‘accidental’ purchase when I was buying a couple of shrubs for a client in the local garden centre. They just leapt into the trolley, like they were desperate for a new home. I’m hoping they do better than the ones I planted last year.
6. Another accident
To keep the cyclamen company, a winter aconite also made the leap to my trolley.
Hopefully the garden will come along quickly now that the new month is here, but for more exciting sixes, you might want to head to Jim’s blog where you’ll find links to many others.

There’s also the #SixonSaturday hashtag on twitter and Mastodon for lots of great photos from around world.
Have a great weekend.
