My Little Garden 5th February 2022
This weekend I’m away on a little jaunt up to the Lake District, which includes a visit to the wonderful Holehird Gardens in Windermere. I’m calling it a birthday trip because I’m sixty something next week, but really it’s just a break from the mess at home following the recent plastering episode. Holehird is a fabulous garden that I’ve visited many times before and is run entirely by volunteers from the Lakeland Horticultural Society. I was secretly hoping for a little snow on the hills, and although you probably can’t make it out from this shot taken in the gardens yesterday, there was a sprinkling of the white stuff on the distant fells. The snowdrops were rather special too!
In my own, rather more modest garden, things are moving on slowly but surely. The snowdrops are in full swing, and the iris are poised to bloom. And talking of iris, I was rather amused after a week of windy weather, to find that the first one to put in an appearance, had a rather appropriate name. Which brings me nicely to the first of my Six on Saturday choices.

I was hoping that this would be in full flower for today, but it’s clearly saving itself for next week.
2. Cyclamen coum
I planted a little clump of these last year and they looked so pretty with the snowdrops that I thought I’d acquire a few more to speed up a reasonable display. Unfortunately the ones from last year are still minus any flowers so I don’t think they are totally happy. But I bought two more anyway and we’ll see what happens.
One is a deep pink
And the other much paler.
3. Hellebore number one
Signs of life on the yellow speckled one.
4. Hellebore number two
H. Ice n Roses is still looking fabulous but Penny’s Pink is desperately trying to catch up.
5. Pulmonaria
Not a very exciting photo, but I’m really looking forward to the flowers.
6. Snowdrops
These are just the bog standard sort - aka Galanthus nivalis.
And this is a rubbish photo of the double version Galanthus nivalis ‘Flore Pleno’.
And that’s it from a very chilly Lake District. Home later to start tackling the painting now that the plaster is dry.
