My Little Garden 5th June 2021
After a few days of ‘staycation’ last week, followed by a busy weekend sorting the garden out, it’s been good to have a relatively quiet few days. A couple of projects have been finished off and although I’m meeting a new client next week, I have a little time on my hands for now. I might even go shopping!
There’s also my first garden visit with The Garden Media Guild to look forward to on Monday. We’re going to Goldstone Hall and Wollerton Old Hall Gardens in Shropshire. A few photos may be taken….
Meanwhile, back in my little garden, the sun has encouraged a few new flowers to put in an appearance, and these are my choices for the first week of June.
- Poppies
The first poppies of the summer opened this week. I planted Papaver ‘Patty’s Plum’ for a client a few weeks ago and thought I’d order an extra one from Bluebell Cottage Gardens for myself. I have a similar poppy that’s more of a dusky pink but this one’s a beauty.
2. Astrantia
As well as the poppies, the first flowers on the astrantia have just opened. I think this one is ‘Star of Fire' and the plant is huge so I’m hoping for many weeks of gorgeous blooms.
3. Alchemilla mollis
This is a plant that you can never get rid of even if you want to, but I still like it in moderation. The pink is from a Pelargonium lurking in a pot behind.
4. Iris
A new purchase a few weeks back from the nursery at Arley Hall. I’m not sure whether it was the description of the iris that most appealed to me or it’s delightful name. Who could resist Iris ‘Flight of Butterflies’. Not me!
5. Primula
It often surprises me that Primula beesiana grows in this part of the garden. It gets sun from first thing in the morning until 3pm and isn’t in a particularly damp spot. Not that I’m complaining. The forget-me-nots will probably be removed this weekend. I only leave a couple of plants to seed in an out of the way corner to avoid being overrun with them.
6. Roses
And finally, much later than last year, this was the week that the first of the roses bloomed. Gertrude Jekyll won the race for the first flower of 2021 and there are a mass of buds to come. A beautiful fragrant rose.
And that’s my selection this week. The warm dry weather continues which means watering duties in the garden, but that’s a minor chore in the grand scheme of things. Long may it continue.
Wishing you all a great weekend, and if you want to find out what’s happening elsewhere around the gardening world, take a look at the blog of The Propagator who is the creator of this weekly collection.
