My Little Garden 6th Jan 2024

Happy New Year!

I’m really excited about the prospect of getting going with the gardening year. There’s something about the start of January that gives me cause for optimism, and since the rain stopped, I’ve been pottering around the garden whenever I have a spare moment. I’ve spotted lots of things that are ‘almost’ flowering - snowdrops, cyclamen coum, crocus, but I suspect it will be a couple of weeks yet. Oh, the anticipation….

I was quite nervous that this week’s six would have to be identical to last week, but whilst I’m ‘scraping the barrel’, they are slightly different. It’s a challenge!

  1. Indoor bulbs

This week it’s a hyacinth.

2. Francoa seedheads

I normally cut these back in late autumn, but I didn’t this time.

Now they’ve survived until January l, I thought I’d cut a couple and stick them in a little inkpot vase. The ones in the purple vase are asters.

3. Crocus

Crocus sieberi ‘Firefly’ has a proper flower. Ok, it’s only one, but it’s a start.

4. Viburnum

This smells gorgeous and the little flowers are pretty, although in terms of overall looks I’m a little underwhelmed by the shrub.

5. Cornus

Colourful stems.

And a shriveled leaf clinging on.

6. Hellebore

Lots of progress on the hellebore front, but this one is in full bloom.

And that’s it for the first Saturday in January. The weather is turning colder, which I don’t mind as long as the rain stops.

Have a great weekend.
