My Little Garden 6th March 2021
It’s been a bit of a chilly start to March, but the mix of frost and sunshine in the first half of the week was just marvellous. Not so much the grey skies from Wednesday onwards…..
The lawn had it’s first mow last Sunday and looks so much better for it. I’d forgotten how much easier it is with the cordless mower I bought at the start of lockdown last year. Almost enjoyable, but then it is a small lawn!
I had expected a good rate of progress with the daffodils this week but the lack of sun since Wednesday has held things back and I’m still waiting for Jetfire to get going. Hopefully next week will see more flowers opening.
In the meantime, here are my six choices for this week without any yellow.
- Frost
Compared to February the frosts this week have been nothing more than a photo opportunity. These bellis always look pretty with a bit of sugar frosting.
2. Crocus
They have been fantastic this year and on a sunny day they provide nectar for the pollinators as well as a bright splash of colour. I don’t normally get too excited about these early bulbs, but I think I’ve changed my mind.
This would have been quite a decent photo without the rogue tulip leaf gate crashing the shot.
3. The Ginger Beast
We haven’t had a cat living with us for a few years now, but we have regular visitors and this ginger beast frequently turns up to say hello, chase the birds and leave presents in the borders. He’s normally quite friendly but that look is definitely a glower. Maybe I interrupted his bird chasing activities.
4. Wallflowers
Some new purchases from Sarah Raven turned up this week. They are a perennial variety called Erysimum ‘Winter Orchid’ and one of them will go to replace the wallflower that suffered serious frost damage.
5. Hellebores
My favourite yellow variety isn’t playing ball at the moment so this is not the complete collection, but here they are floating in a dish. Sometimes it’s the best way to view hellebores.
6. Iris
And finally, Alida is putting on a pretty impressive show. A really lovely iris and a beautiful shade of blue.
And that’s my ‘Six on Saturday’ for another week as we creep ever closer to spring.
